Shift Leader Post Title Shift Leader Post Purpose The Shift Leader supports the smooth, safe and efficient daily operation of ELA Active Ltd sports centres. The role leads on key operational tasks, maintains high standards of cleanliness and supervision, and provides confident operational support to the Duty Manager team. The Shift Leader holds key holder responsibility and is expected to maintain up-to-date knowledge of all ELA Active sites to provide seamless operational support and cross-site cover when required. Reporting To Sports Centre Manager Working Hours 37 hours per week on a shift rota, including: Early mornings Evenings Weekends Salary From £25,584 Holiday Entitlement 24 days annual leave plus statutory public holidays, increasing with length of service. Location ELA Active Ltd is part of the Eastern Learning Alliance Trust. This role involves working across all ELA Active Ltd sports centre sites. Disclosure Level Enhanced DBS with Barred List check required. Key Responsibilities 1. Facility Operations & Daily Delivery Ensure efficient operation of the facility during shifts, maintaining high standards of safety, cleanliness and service. Carry out daily operational duties including building checks, pool setups and cleaning across wet and dry facilities. Monitor equipment condition and report maintenance issues promptly. Support setup and delivery of bookings, activities, events and programme transitions. Ensure accident and incident reporting is completed accurately and in line with ELA Active procedures. 2. Customer Service & Engagement Promote a welcoming, professional environment delivering excellent customer care. Respond effectively to customer enquiries, feedback and complaints, escalating where appropriate. Provide operational support across all areas, including reception duties when required. Assist with delivery of events, holiday clubs and special programmes. 3. Pool Supervision & Pool Plant Support Provide poolside supervision in accordance with RLSS standards. Conduct daily water testing and monitor chemical levels in line with health and safety requirements. Support Duty Managers with routine pool plant operations and reporting. Hold or be willing to obtain the National Pool Plant Operators Qualification. Identify and escalate water quality or safety concerns immediately. 4. Staff Support & Communication Act as a positive role model for frontline staff. Support Duty Managers in communicating expectations and maintaining service standards. Assist with new staff inductions and basic on-the-job training. Encourage teamwork and collaborative working practices. 5. Health, Safety & Maintenance Promote and comply with all ELA Active health and safety policies. Complete routine facility checks including fire safety equipment, emergency lighting, first aid provision and COSHH compliance. Ensure equipment is used safely and hazards are resolved or escalated promptly. Support cleaning schedules to maintain high facility standards. 6. Key Holder & Emergency Responsibilities Hold key holder responsibilities across all ELA Active sites. Open and close facilities independently following operational and security procedures. Undertake lifeguarding duties as required in accordance with RLSS standards. Act as designated First Aider and Fire Marshal when assigned. 7. Shift Management Maintain operational competence to open and close facilities when directed. Take ownership of delegated responsibilities and report progress. Make informed operational decisions during shifts when senior managers are not present. Act as operational lead when required to ensure service continuity. 8. Emergency Response & Operational Continuity Support emergency responses and take appropriate action to maintain safety. Take operational leadership when acting as the most senior staff member on duty. Apply initiative and sound judgment to resolve operational issues quickly. Escalate incidents appropriately with clear and timely communication. Maintain familiarity with emergency procedures and promote operational readiness. 9. Performance & Operational Goals Support delivery of delegated Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). Monitor progress and identify opportunities for operational improvement. Contribute to service enhancements informed by customer feedback and operational data. 10. Training & Development Maintain a valid RLSS Pool Lifeguard Qualification. Attend monthly RLSS training sessions (minimum two hours per month – additional paid time). Complete mandatory safeguarding and child protection training. Successfully complete all compulsory role training within the probation period. Obtain and maintain National Pool Plant Operators qualification. Participate in ongoing professional development and refresher training. 11. Cross-Site Working & Flexibility Maintain operational knowledge across all ELA Active locations. Demonstrate flexibility in working hours and locations when required. Deliver consistent service standards across all sites. Work collaboratively with colleagues across the organisation. 12. Safeguarding Responsibilities Comply fully with ELA Trust safeguarding policies and procedures. Attend annual safeguarding training and refresher sessions. Promote safeguarding awareness and safe working practices. Actively safeguard the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults. 13. Trust Ethos Support and promote the mission and values of the Eastern Learning Alliance Trust. Adhere to all Trust policies and procedures. Comply with the Trust Health and Safety Policy at all times. Additional Duties Whilst every effort has been made to outline the main duties of the post, the post holder may be required to undertake other reasonable duties commensurate with the role. Qualifications required
Essential National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) or willingness to obtain within an agreed timeframe.
